Hey All - A week ago !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! about my experiences driving a tow truck back when you could do that as a part-time job with little training.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

A friend of mine sent me this link last night: the station was robbed on New Year's.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Now, keep in mind that I worked there more than 20 years ago but it is the same station. When I worked there, it was a full-service station with three bays for working on cars and several mechanics on staff. Today it is a typical self-serve with a convenience store where I used to work on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! after hours.

And no, I do not own a hoodie.

One last quick note. I am at 1,099 twitter followers. Anyone want to make it 1,100?

@stevelehto

I don't tweet a whole lot so I won't fill your feed with nonsense. At least, not more than you can handle.

How about a copy of the Lemon Law Bible? I'll mail it to you if you send me your postal address. Send it to Lehto@kennon.com

Thanks!

Good Stuff, brought back memories of when I worked at a gas station as a teenager myself. Although, I unfortunately don't have any tow truck stories, I have a lot of crazy storiesof stuff that happened on the night shift 11pm-7am.

I almost got a job towing part time during college, but the company couldn't get insurance on me unless I was 22. I had just turned 21.

As a cashier? I did a brief stint at a station on Woodward, behind the bullet proof glass. Sometimes, I was glad it was there.

Yes, It was very entertaining at night. I saw the Hotel across the way raided by police numerous times for drugs, I saw a cabbie and a pan handler fight and the cabbie cheated, pulled out a stun gun and tazed the hell out of the poor guy. I once had to shut the station down due to an elderly person having a heart attack and knocking down a pump (that was scary!!!) I saw and tried to stop a drunk idiot who filled his friends Porsche with diesel (that was funny!!!) He even argued about me giving him a refund. Saw 2 shootings, a pedestrian hit and run, drunk people sleeping in the car wash, day labor workers asking for the flowers with the glass tubes (crack tubes) people passing out in the knee high bushes... CRAZYNESS !!!

Wow. I used to drive a tow truck part time too. I had overnights on weekends, and the company had a contract with local and state police for our area. Got to hook a lot of DUI cars and the occasional 2AM wrecks, then we'd get the "It's snowing, go take every car off the highway that you see" calls... could go anywhere from lots of sleep to really exciting. Plus I had a tow truck at my disposal for interesting home projects on the weekends (pulling engines with the boom!)

In four years of towing I only damaged one car, and boy was the shop owner pissed at me when I said "That's what we have insurance for." Hey, what did I know, I'd never damaged a car before. I think they went to small claims court to settle it. Unfortunately I damaged that car on my last weekend towing. (they didn't fire me) I talked to the guy a few months later and he was still pissed about it!

They were in so tight with the different police departments (and two local strip clubs). Nobody, not NOBODY would ever have tried to rob that shop. (they also had a couple of service bays and 4 gas stations in the immediate area) There was always a cop or a bouncer somewhere near one of the stations and they all had radios to each other.

That was probably my most fun job ever. I really enjoyed it and still keep my own car trailer which I use for the occasional 'stranded friend' rescue tow. I've often thought about picking up an old wrecker or ramp truck just to have...
